The AQUAGO concept :


The new concept now developed by AQUAGO allows the increase of the treatment capacity of natural lagooning systems while minimizing financial impact:

• no land acquisition costs,
• no costs related to construction or road and utility infrastructure,
• no electrical connection costs; self-sufficient system,
• no operating costs.

The AQUAGO concept is ultimately 70% less expensive than other technologies such as reed bed or bio-discs.

Depending on the size, the AQUAGO concept:

• increases lagooning capacity by 30% to 250%,
• reduces odor pollution,
• limits the proliferation of duckweed.

The concept is based on a patented aeration system: SUNGO. It has been studied for several years and has been approved by French local authorities such as the Water Agency, Water Police, and General Councils (SATESE, organization providing technical support for water treatment and monitoring).


Principle of natural lagooning

The principle of natural lagooning based on its self-purification abilities has been known since the Antiquity. The same principle is now used to treat household wastewater and even some industrial effluents.

Positive feed-backs from projects around the world boosted the development of natural lagooning in the nineteen eighties. It has since then become a reliable rustic treatment process, well-adapted to small to medium communities. Currently 20% of all the French wastewater treatment facilities use this process. However, most of the natural lagooning facilities are aging with more than 35% of the facilities being over 10 years old.

At the time of their construction, the size of these facilities was calculated based on a certain population equivalent (PE). Changes in demographics often led to an increase of household wastewater both in volume and load that was often not taken into account when the facilities were designed. In addition, lagoons that have been in operation for more than ten years require cleaning to maintain them in good working order.

Many factors can render natural lagooning systems unstable or dysfunctional: exceeding the load capacity (seasonal or permanent overload), strong concentration of raw effluents and high septicity, water column stratification, algal bloom, issue relative to the design of the facility, or lack of maintenance (for example : lagoon not cleaned after ten years).


Malfunctions of natural lagooning wasterwater plants :

Most of the wastewater lagooning plants built in the 80’s and 90’s now reach saturation due to the increase of population. Overloaded, they show malfunctions such as : odors, purple bacteria blooms, duckweeds and lower purification performances.



Solutions for overloaded wastewater lagooning plants

The common solutions are :

• Technology change
• Increase of the size of the ponds

Therefore, the collectivities have to face many issues :
• Cost of the land
• Costs related to construction or road and utility infrastructure
• Electrical connection costs
• Augmentation of operating costs

The AQUAGO solutions are an alternative.
